Natural freshwater cultured pearls are cultured in lakes and rivers from the species Hyriopsis cumingii in Asia and Amblema in North America and Northern Europe. In these species, a single shell can produce several pearls at once, sometimes even more than 20, being harvested after 2 to 6 years. The cultivation of freshwater pearls has been attested since the 13th century, with China currently being the world leader in production.
