Kunzite is the light pink to violet purple variety of spodumene mineral. The stone was named after the pioneering gemologist George Frederick Kunz (1856-1932), who was the first to identify it as a unique variety of spodumene. Kunzite gets its delicate color from traces of manganese.

It is found in Afghanistan, Brazil, Madagascar, Russia, Mexico, Sweden, Pakistan, Australia and the US state of California.
