Kunzite is a variety of the Spodumene mineral that has colors ranging from light pink to purple pink. The stone was named after the pioneering gemologist George Frederick Kunz (1856-1932), who was the first to identify it as a unique variety of spodumene. Kunzite gets its delicate color from traces of manganese.

It is found in Afghanistan, Brazil, Madagascar, Russia, Mexico, Sweden, Pakistan, Australia and the US state of California.
